Repeatability and randomness in heterogeneous freezing nucleation

چکیده

This study is aimed at clarifying the relative importance of the specific character of the nuclei and of the duration of supercooling in heterogeneous freezing nucleation by immersed impurities. Laboratory experiments were carried out in which sets of water drops underwent multiple cycles of freezing and melting. The drops contained suspended particles of mixtures of materials; the resulting freezing temperatures ranged from−6C to−24C. Rank correlation coefficients between observed freezing temperatures of the drops in successive runs were >0.9 with very high statistical significance, and thus provide strong support for the modified singular model of heterogeneous immersion freezing nucleation. For given drops, changes in freezing temperatures between cycles were relatively small (<1C) for the majority of the events. These frequent small fluctuations in freezing temperatures are interpreted as reflections of the random nature of embryo growth and are associated with a nucleation rate that is a function of a temperature difference from the characteristic temperatures of nuclei. About a sixth of the changes were larger, up to ±5C, and exhibited some systematic patterns. These are thought to arise from alterations of the nuclei, some being permanent and some transitory. The results are used to suggest ways of describing ice initiation in cloud models that account for both the temperature and the time dependence of freezing nucleation.

Interactive comment on “Repeatability and randomness in heterogeneous freezing nucleation” by G. Vali

Data included in the paper under discussion were obtained with two slightly different soil suspensions and with a distilled water sample. Key results are consistent for all three samples even though they contained materials of various chemical composition and physical state. This fact raises the possibility, but with a question mark, that the concepts arrived at in the paper are perhaps applica...

Effects of Statically Electric Fields on Freezing Parameters and Microstructures of Button Mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus)

Background and Objectives: Freezing under statically electric fields is one of the novel freezing methods to improve the quality of frozen products by controlling the nucleation process. The objective of this study was to investigate effects of freezing under electrostatic fields on the freezing parameters and microstructures of frozen button mushrooms. Materials and Methods: Mushroom samples w...

Interactive comment on “BINARY: an optical freezing array for assessing temperature and time dependence of heterogeneous ice nucleation” by C. Budke and T. Koop

The paper presents a new tool to study heterogeneous ice nucleation in the immersion freezing mode. The Bielefeld Ice Nucleation ARaY BINARY is an optical freezing array that was thoroughly tested and applied/characterized using Snomax as ice nucleator as described in the manuscript. The ice nucleation process itself is assessed for its temperature and time dependence, thus distinguishing betwe...

A modeling study of ice formation affected by aerosols

[1] This study investigates the effects of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nuclei (IN) on ice formation in mixed-phase clouds using an adiabatic parcel model. The simulations with lower updrafts represent mixed-phase stratiform clouds, and those with higher updrafts represent deep convective clouds. Increasing CCN concentration can lead to more ice crystals with smaller sizes, but does ...
